Tea Smarts
  • All tea comes from the Camelia sinensis plant. The four basic types of tea are black, oolong, green, and white. So called herbal and fruit teas are actually considered “infusions” or “tisanes”. Summerbridge Tea carries a variety of both teas and infusions, and special ordering is easy so we’ll always have the brew that’s right for you.
  • Orange Pekoe is not a type of tea; it is a grading system for black tea based on the size of the processed and dried black tea leaves. Teas graded on the Orange Pekoe system are processed using the “orthodox method” of bruising the leaves either by hand or by using large roller machines. Another method of processing tea is the Cut, Tear, Curl (CTC) method which uses rollers with sharp teeth to chop the tea into tiny pieces. All Summerbridge Tea leaves are graded on the whole-leaf Orange Pekoe scale.
  • Tea contains powerful antioxidants called flavonoids which may help protect against heart disease, stroke and some cancers.
  • Whole-leaf, loose teas give a better, fuller flavored brew than standard tea bags. The tiny pieces of tea leaves found in standard tea bags stale almost immediately because the essential oils responsible for flavor evaporate. Whole-leaf tea is more flavorful, and that’s all you’ll find at Summerbridge Tea.
  • The average cup of tea contains less than half the caffeine found in coffee. You can easily and quickly decaffeinate your own tea by brewing the leaves for 30-60 seconds (depending on the type of tea), pouring off the liquid, and then following the brewing instructions.
  • If you over-brew your tea, it will become bitter. Remove your Summerbridge Tea leaves as soon as the recommended brewing time is up. For a stronger tea, add more leaves; for a weaker brew, add fewer leaves.
  • Summerbridge Tea only carries quality teas, and when brewed properly, they rarely need milk or sweeteners. Take a few sips and decide what, if anything, your tea really needs. This is a good way to reduce calories too.
